As the PET Recycling Facility (PRF) construction in Chitwan progresses, safety has emerged as the top priority, reflecting the project’s commitment to worker welfare and sustainable practices. Ensuring a safe working environment is essential, not only to protect the workers but to set a positive example for the construction industry in Nepal, where safety standards are often not fully enforced.
At the PRF Chitwan site, the focus on occupational safety is more than just a guideline—it’s a core value that drives everyday operations. Workers on site are continuously reminded of the importance of personal responsibility when it comes to safety. Despite facing challenging conditions, such as the intense heat of the construction site, every worker is committed to wearing the Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) provided. It’s understood that while enduring the discomfort of high temperatures is temporary, their safety and lives cannot be compromised.
This shift in mindset has been a result of the ongoing Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) training provided to the workforce. These sessions focus on empowering workers with the knowledge and tools to identify risks, minimize hazards, and follow safety protocols in their daily tasks. The consistent emphasis on safety has led to significant improvements in worker behavior, fostering a culture of safety across the site.
A significant part of ensuring the workers' safety at the PRF site has been the availability of comprehensive safety kits and the provision of high-quality PPE. Unlike many construction sites in Nepal, where basic safety measures may be lacking, Project CAP has prioritized safety equipment to ensure that each worker has the necessary tools to do their job safely. From hard hats and gloves to protective eyewear and high-visibility vests, the workers have everything they need to mitigate risks and reduce the potential for accidents.
In addition to providing safety equipment, regular monitoring and feedback mechanisms have been put in place to ensure that safety standards are consistently upheld. Supervisors and safety officers perform daily checks, ensuring that workers are adhering to safety protocols, and that any issues are addressed in real-time. This continuous monitoring process has led to a significant decrease in accidents on-site and has fostered a sense of accountability among the workers.
The proactive approach of Project CAP in integrating safety standards into daily operations is more than just a compliance measure—it’s a commitment to human resources and a recognition that workers are the backbone of the project’s success. This culture of safety extends beyond the PRF site, influencing other areas of the project and ensuring that worker welfare is always a top priority.
The efforts at the PRF Chitwan site set a benchmark for other construction projects in Nepal. By investing in safety and ensuring its consistent practice, Project CAP is showing that construction projects can be both environmentally responsible and human centered. Safety is not just a policy—it's an intrinsic part of the project's culture, reinforcing the message that human well-being is essential to the long-term success of any initiative.
Project CAP is proud to be leading by example, demonstrating that when safety is prioritized, productivity and morale are enhanced, contributing to the successful construction of a sustainable recycling facility that will have a lasting impact on Nepal's plastic waste management efforts. As we move forward, our focus will remain on ensuring that safety standards are maintained and further strengthened as part of our ongoing commitment to creating a plastic-free future.
