A young leader with a vision, a city full of plastic, and a dream to make it disappear

For Abhishek Chand, the fight against plastic pollution began not with a grand plan, but with a single moment of realization: "We can do something about this." In Hetauda, a city grappling with the escalating issue of plastic waste, Abhishek was selected to lead a group of 11 youths as part of the VFC Youth Cohorts under Project CAP. This initiative wasn't just about raising awareness—it was about taking action to tackle plastic pollution head-on.

The mission was straightforward but challenging: clean up the rivers, protect the environment, and change people’s minds about the impact of plastic. The team got to work, conducting two river cleanup campaigns in Hetauda. They spent hours collecting plastic waste from the rivers, directly confronting the problem that was suffocating local ecosystems. But the hardest part wasn’t just picking up trash—it was convincing the community that plastic pollution was a real threat. For many, plastic was just a normal part of life, something that seemed harmless and easy to ignore.

Despite the skepticism, Abhishek and his team didn’t give up. They held community meetings, organized workshops, and visited schools to spread awareness. Over time, they began to change the way people saw plastic and its impact on the environment. One of their most successful initiatives was the "Trade Plastic Waste for Plants" event. In this creative project, community members could exchange their plastic waste for a plant, turning trash into something green and alive. It wasn’t just about cleaning up—it was about showing how we can repurpose plastic waste and create something positive.

One of their most successful initiatives, the “Trade Plastic Waste for Plants” event, stands as a powerful testament to what small actions can lead to. In this innovative project, community members exchanged their plastic waste for a plant, turning what was once discarded into something green and alive. It wasn’t just about getting rid of trash—it was about showing how plastic waste could be a resource if we only managed it with care and creativity.

For Abhishek, this journey was about more than solving a problem—it was about inspiring others to act. His message to young people everywhere? “Don’t wait for motivation—create it. Don’t follow others; lead with your ideas and take action on what matters.”

Abhishek’s story proves that one person can spark a movement and that when young people rise and take the lead, they can change the world around them. His work with Project CAP is helping to build a cleaner, greener future, where plastic pollution is no longer allowed to threaten our rivers, wildlife, or planet.

This is only the beginning. Abhishek’s journey is a reminder that the future doesn’t just happen—it’s made by the hands of those who dare to act, it’s something we create with every step we take.
