An Economy for Planet and People

A circular economy is an economic model that replaces the traditional linear system of take, make, and dispose with a regenerative approach that keeps materials in use for as long as possible. It focuses on reducing resource extraction, promoting reuse and recycling, and minimizing waste generation. In rapidly urbanizing cities like Kathmandu, increasing plastic consumption and landfill pressure have made circular economy principles essential for environmental protection, climate resilience, and sustainable development. Rather than viewing waste as a problem, the circular approach treats it as a valuable resource within a continuous system.

CREASION applies circular economy principles by strengthening PET waste recovery systems and improving plastic value chains. The organization works closely with communities to promote source segregation, identifies plastic hotspot areas, and supports private waste enterprises in improving collection, aggregation, and recycling processes. By linking informal waste workers with formal recycling markets, CREASION enhances efficiency while also improving livelihoods. This integrated approach ensures that plastic waste is redirected back into production cycles instead of ending up in landfills or rivers.

Through CREASION 2.0, the organization is expanding its role from a waste management implementer to a circular ecosystem builder. It engages municipalities, promotes climate smart schools and youth awareness, and advocates for policies that encourage sustainable production and responsible consumption. By connecting communities, enterprises, and local governments, CREASION contributes to building cleaner cities, stronger green businesses, and inclusive circular systems that generate environmental, social, and economic impact simultaneously.

You can easily obtain a brand new t-shirt from 10 plastic bottles, a sweater from 63 plastic bottles and a sleeping bag from 114 plastic bottles!

The concept of the Circular Economy focuses on the regenerative designing of products that would enable continued use of it. Basically, it aims to retain the quality and usability of products for a longer period of time. It entails closing the loop so that the functionality of resources is restored and waste is kept minimal. The current trend of the linear economy works on the culture of use and dispose.

Pillars

Climate Change integration works under these four pillars;

Design Out Waste and Pollution

CREASION works with communities and local enterprises to reduce plastic leakage at the source. By promoting proper waste segregation, reducing single-use plastics, and supporting eco-friendly practices, CREASION minimizes pollution before it occurs.

1

Keep Products and Materials in Use

Through PET collection, aggregation, and recycling, CREASION ensures that plastic waste becomes a valuable resource. The organization strengthens private waste enterprises, promotes repair and reuse initiatives, and links informal waste workers to formal recycling markets.

2

Regenerate Natural Systems

CREASION integrates climate-smart practices such as composting organic waste, promoting greener school and community spaces, and restoring local environments. These efforts not only prevent degradation but actively improve ecosystem health in hotspot areas.

3

Systems Thinking and Collaboration

CREASION connects municipalities, businesses, schools, youth groups, and marginalized communities to create a holistic circular ecosystem. By aligning policy, enterprise, and community action, the organization ensures that waste management, livelihoods, and environmental sustainability are mutually reinforced.

Our Strategy

Theory of Change

Theory of Change

Our strategy for transitioning to a circular economy in plastic recycling focuses on minimizing plastic waste and maximizing the value of plastic products through enhanced recycling. Our long-term vision is to significantly reduce environmental impact by decreasing plastic waste in landfills and rivers, conserving resources, and driving economic growth via a robust circular market for recycled plastics.

To achieve this, we prioritize immediate actions such as improving collection rates, upgrading sorting and processing infrastructure, and increasing public awareness. Intermediate steps include producing high-quality recycled plastics, adopting advanced recycling technologies, and integrating recycled materials into new products.

We envision a future where communities are self-reliant and empowered to lead their own development initiatives. Our decentralized development approach puts locals and beneficiaries at the forefront of envisioning and executing the changes needed for a better tomorrow.
