PROMOTING CIRCULAR ECONOMY OF PLASTICS BY EFFECTIVELY WORKING TOWARDS MINIMIZING PLASTIC WASTE AND DIVERTING EXISTING WASTE INTO PRODUCT VALUE CHAIN.
Green Shift: Circularity of Plastic Waste for Net-Zero Carbon Nepal (GreenShift Nepal) project is funded by the European Union to promote a just transition to circular economy. GreenShift Nepal is a four-year project which will be implemented in 9 municipalities – 3 in each of Bagmati, Madhesh, and Lumbini provinces. The project implementation is led by CREASION through the consortium partners Restless Development, and Youth Innovation Lab (YI-LAB).
GreenShift Nepal will work with waste enterprises, SMEs, CSOs of waste workers, youths, school children, and three tiers of government in the promotion of circular economy of plastics. The project intends to: build the capacity of waste enterprises to improve their plastic waste collection efficiency; support SMEs for the promotion of plastic alternative products and packaging; work with school children in generating knowledge and awareness; engage youths in leading advocacy and awareness campaigns; and enhance the capacity of three tiers of government for inclusive and evidence-based policies through active involvement of youths and CSOs of waste workers with the goal of moving towards the circularity of plastics.

Circular economy is a concept that aims to minimize waste and promote sustainable use of natural resources through smarter product design, longer use, recycling, and regenerate nature. Circular economy is driven by three major principles which are: eliminate waste and pollution, circulate products and materials (at their highest values), and regenerate nature.
The consumption of global biomass, fossil fuels, metals and minerals are expected to double in the next forty years. The trend is similar for Nepal, which has caused tremendous pressure on the natural resources of the country. One of such products that requires fossil fuels for its production is plastic. The use of plastics has increased significantly in Nepal and around the world alike. Hence, for the move towards circular economy, it will be important to efficiently manage the existing plastic waste and work towards plastic reduction. So, GreenShift Nepal project is developed to support the just transition to circular economy of plastics.
The project will mainly focus on two principles of circular economy: elimination of waste and pollution and circulate products and materials. GreenShift Nepal will work with youths and school children to generate awareness on plastic waste and support small businesses for the promotion of plastic alternative products. Likewise, it will also work with private waste enterprises in enhancing plastic waste collection and recycling. Additionally, the project will work in incorporating the principles of circular economy into the policies at local, provincial, and federal levels.
GreenShift Nepal has 3 focus areas:
FA 1: Plastic waste management
Strengthening of existing private waste enterprise
FA 2: Innovation around non-plastic packaging and promotion of green enterprises
Sustainable packaging program
Green Business accelerator program
FA 3: Support advocacy data and policy changes
