Project CAP

In Nepal, plastic leakage into the environment (particularly rivers) is estimated to be around 20 Kilo Tons per year. With increasing plastic consumption and lack of an efficient plastic management mechanism, leakage has increased.

Project CAP (Collaborative Approach for Preventing Plastic Leakages in Rivers of Nepal) aims to divert plastic waste into product value chain from landfills and rivers by strengthening plastic waste collection mechanism and strengthening recycling efforts through the introduction of technological innovations. The project will develop a collaborative model to engage all the major stakeholders in establishing a strong plastic waste value chain. Project CAP is one of the projects by the PLEASE (Plastic Free Rivers and Seas of South Asia) in Nepal, which is implemented by the South Asia Co-operative Environment Program (SACEP), supported by UNOPS and the World Bank.

asked about

What is Project CAP?

Project CAP’s full form is Project Collaborative Approach for Preventing Plastic Leakages in Rivers of Nepal. It is a one-year project which is one of the funded projects of PLEASE Project (Plastic Free Rivers and Seas of South Asia) in Nepal which is being implemented by The South Asia Cooperative Environment Programme (SACEP), in partnership with the United Nations Office for Procurement Services (UNOPS), funded by the World Bank and Parley for the Oceans.

How is this project related to PARLEY’S AIR Strategy?

PARLEYS’ AIR Strategy is focused on controlling the fast-growing marine pollution. The initials AIR stand for: Avoid plastic wherever possible intercept plastic waste redesign the material itself. Each component and activity within our project are aligned with the principles of the AIR strategy.  The project is designed to reduce plastic leakage through – a reduction in plastic consumption and, intercepting for recycling.

Who are the Key Stakeholders of Project CAP?

The key stakeholders of this project are WWs, marginalized and vulnerable groups, youth groups, private waste enterprises, three tiers of governmental bodies, community members and CSO of WWs. Along with waste entrepreneurs, WWs (comprising of waste pickers, sorters, balers, and employees of recycling facilities) form the prime stakeholders of this action.

What are the geographical areas of Nepal which Project CAP is planning to work on?

The Six municipalities viz. Bharatpur Metropolitan City, Bardibas Municipality, Hetauda Sub Metropolitan City , Golanjor Rural Municipality, Ichchhakamana Rural Municipality and Lalitpur Metropolitan City.

How is Project CAP addressing the Plastic waste leakage in rivers of Nepal?

The project is based on the premise that plastic leaks into river systems can be avoided by focusing on two major issues:

i) strengthening plastic waste collection mechanisms, and

ii) recycling facilities to add value to the collected plastic waste. Through the engagement and upliftment of marginalized women and waste workers, the project intends to develop a collaborative model among key stakeholders and an inclusive and participatory mechanism.
