As part of the GreenShift project, CREASION conducted a comprehensive two-day ‘Training and Capacity Building’ program tailored for the Top 10 Private waste and upcycling enterprises selected to compete for the project grant. The training aimed to equip these enterprises with the tools and knowledge needed to align with GreenShift’s mission and maximize their potential impact. Participants engaged in in-depth sessions covering the project’s objectives, the specific goals of the grant, and the critical support role that CREASION will play throughout this process. In addition to these foundational topics, the training delved into essential areas such as organizational and team management, safeguarding practices, and the integration of Gender Equality and Social Inclusion (GESI) within their operations. The sessions also provided a platform for the enterprises to share their unique experiences, challenges, and aspirations, fostering a collaborative learning environment. The training culminated in a detailed briefing on the selection criteria and a framework for the final pitch day, ensuring that all participants are well-prepared to present their proposals. The active participation and insightful contributions from all enterprises highlighted their commitment to advancing sustainability and innovation in waste management and upcycling.

Our Youth Group in Nepalgunj, conducted an inter-dialogue program on the access of youth and adolescent girls to digital technology and BAS/Braitland Youth Award 2024 was organized in Nepalgunj. The program was jointly organized by NICE Nepalgunj and other youth organizations and networks (NGO federation, district youth club network, BAS Nepal etc). Former Minister for Social Development of Lumbini Province Ratna Khatri was the chief guest at the programme. The program was conducted by Hemraj Bhatta, Chairperson of NICE Nepalgunj. More than 120 youths participated in the event. The program was organized in collaboration with Nepalgunj Sub-Metropolitan City.

The VFC-Youth Cohort in Ichchhakamana conducted an awareness program on the effects of Plastic in the region, where they also informed about best practices of afforestaton and plantation in order to achieve a clean and green environment. The VFC-Youth Cohort in Lalitpur organized an inspiring speech competition at Horizon English School. Fifty enthusiastic students from grades 7, 8, and 9 participated, sharing their thoughts on the proper use of plastics. The event aimed to empower the next generation with knowledge about the harmful impacts of plastic on our health and environment, building a community of environmentally conscious youth. The VFC-Youth Cohort in Bardibas conducted an awareness program in Ichchheshwor Secondary School for a total of 31 students from grade 9 and 10. The theme of the awareness program revolved around plastic pollution, types of plastics, and the role of youths to combat the problem. The VFC-Youth Cohort in Bharatpur organized an engaging school awareness program at Lotus Academy. The students enthusiastically learned about the various types of plastics and the importance of proper waste segregation, empowering them to be the change-makers of tomorrow. The VFC-Youth Cohort in Hetauda held a Capacity Building session on Organizational Behavior, where they also addressed the critical issue of plastic pollution. We are proud of youth groups for taking such inspiring initiatives to create an environment of meaningful discussions on mitigating plastic pollution. The VFC-Youth Cohort in Gajuri held a rally to raise awareness about plastic pollution.

This event was a celebration of knowledge and environmental consciousness, designed to engage students in a fun and educational experience. The competition saw our Young Climate Smart Warriors diving into a whirlwind of environmental trivia, covering topics from waste management to sustainable practices and the principles of a circular economy. The atmosphere was electric with anticipation and excitement as teams from each school competed against one another. Students displayed a remarkable depth of knowledge, answering challenging questions with confidence and enthusiasm. The friendly rivalry only added to the spirited atmosphere, with cheers and laughter echoing throughout the event. Beyond the competition, the day was filled with learning and camaraderie. Students not only tested their knowledge but also learned from each other, exchanging ideas and discussing solutions to pressing environmental issues. The event served as a platform for them to showcase their understanding and commitment to creating a sustainable future. The GreenShift team and the school communities were immensely proud of these Young Climate Smart Warriors. Their incredible passion and energy for the environment were evident throughout the day, making the event a memorable experience for everyone involved. This quiz competition was more than just a contest; it was a celebration of the youth's role in shaping a sustainable future, inspiring all participants and spectators alike.
Read MoreCREASION under Project CAP, conducted a Green Circuit Marathon as envisioned in the implementation of the project. The chief reason to do so was to mobilise the VFC-youth cohort. However, it stood as the endeavour driving behavioural change in the entire local community and people participating in the activities regarding plastic waste management. The target of the marathon was to involve as many people as possible to halt the leakages of poisonous plastic pollution in the precious rivers. It attracted participants from a variety of backgrounds, including young and old, local representatives, security forces, and marginalised communities. The marathon successfully made the participant realise that the change should take place at the grassroots level and that it is doable to manage the waste scientifically and socially if we work in a collaborative manner. So far, the marathon lasted for five days. Day 1 of the Green Circuit Marathon was a huge success, giving us heads up for our further campaigns and works. “We started the morning with a spirited river cleanup at Golanjor Municipality, making a tangible difference right from the start,” said CAP project lead Ujjwal Upadhayay. “51 people from diverse backgrounds together collected 863 kg of waste in just one hour.” Furthermore, a comprehensive training and workshop on Waste Smart Schools (WSS) was conducted at Jana Jyoti Secondary School, along with the signing of the MoU and the distribution of Waste Smart Kits, according to Training and Capacity Building Officer Palistha Manandhar. “We also travelled to Shree Kaushika Secondary School to replicate our efforts with another MoU signing and Waste Smart School kit distribution,” she stated. “Alongside these activities, we reached out to vulnerable communities, including fishermen and the dhobi community, ensuring their voices and needs are heard.” Day two started with river clean-up as we collaborated with local stakeholders, youth groups, and community members for the Bhabsi river clean-up in Bardibas. The team successfully collected around 214 kg of plastic and related waste, confirmed VFC-Youth Cohort lead Narayan Adhikari. Additionally, Waste Smart Kits were distributed and training sessions on e-Library setup and usage were held at Shree Rastriya Secondary School, Pashupatinath and Shree Janata Secondary School, Dandatole. The CAP team then left for our new destination, Hetauda. On the third day, the marathon clean-up campaign of the Rapti river saw the participation of over 60 people representing various backgrounds, including youth groups, local communities, government officials, and security forces. “We collected a total of 343 kg of mixed waste, including plastics, bottles, multi-layered plastics, organic waste, and other low-grade materials,” assured MERL specialist Larisha Dhakal. Additionally, the team visited Amar Secondary School and Sramik Secondary School to formalise Waste Smart Clubs and provide training for setting up e-libraries. Similarly, Day 4 of the Marathon started with the Narayani River Clean-Up, where 106 participants, including partners, youth groups, local communities, government officials, and security forces, collaborated to collect a total of 566 kg of waste. Later, the team visited Shree Chameli Madhyamik Vidhyala and Sajapur Madhyamik Vidhyala to establish Waste Smart Clubs and provide training on setting up e-libraries. “We also got to meet and greet some of our vulnerable Majhi and Dhobi community members, who are our equal partners in this drive,” said GESI and safeguarding expert Manisha Bhattarai. The Five-Day marathon concluded successfully after the team reached Ichchhakamana and Gajuri Rural Municipality on the final day to clean the Trishuli river belt. More than 150 people supported the cause, including youth groups, local communities, government officials, and security forces, and collected 218 kg and 378 kg of waste in Ichchhakamana and Gajuri, respectively, as per Project Associate Shamsher Tamang. As part of school engagement, the team visited Shree Adarsha Secondary School, Gajuri-1 and Sarva Shanti Secondary School, Kurintar-4, Ichchhakamana, to establish Waste Smart Clubs and provide training on setting up e-libraries. This is just the beginning of our project, the CAP marathon to prevent plastic leakages in Nepal's rivers under Plastic Free Rivers and Seas for South Asia,” said General Secretary, Sujata Koirala. “Our endeavour is to inculcate behavioural change in people to prevent plastic leakages in our water resources.”

During this time, they had the chance acquire essential skills and knowledge to establish or elevate their Climate Smart Businesses. On Day 2, the Climate Smart Entrepreneurs had an exciting visit to Le Sherpa Farmer’s Market, followed by an insightful tour of Kleanit Upcyclers innovation line at the National Innovation Center, led by the founders of Kleanit Upcyclers themselves. Throughout the day, Our top 20 entrepreneurs immersed themselves in engaging sessions covering marketing, branding, technology, self-awareness, customer segmentation, and dynamic idea presentations. On 𝐃𝐚𝐲 𝟑 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐁𝐨𝐨𝐭𝐜𝐚𝐦𝐩, our 𝐂𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐒𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐄𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐮𝐫𝐬 immersed themselves in the green economy, crafting innovative strategies for their climate-smart enterprises. The day kicked off with identifying key partners, resources, and activities vital to their businesses. They then explored sustainability and innovation through engaging sessions on Design and Systems Thinking, the Green Economy, Social Media Marketing, Brand Awareness, Basic Finance for Entrepreneurs, and starting a startup in Nepal. Last but not the least the mentors and the mentees had a networking session to get to know about each enterprises as well the expertise of each mentors. The three day Bootcamp was filled with deep dives and creative breakthroughs, laying a solid foundation for their future ventures.

The first day of the training and workshop concluded on a high note as 10 teachers and 20 student representatives from 12 schools participated in a full day enriching and leadership development training to address plastic waste management in their respective schools through Waste Smart Clubs. A total of 30 Participants were trained on the significance of Waste Smart Club Initiative and how it can play a pivotal role in transforming young minds with proper guidance on waste management and curbing plastic pollution at grassroot level. To establish the Waste Smart Clubs in schools, CREASION is going to assist them with NRs 105,000 for each school.

The first day featured introductory sessions where youth groups were introduced, followed by fun ice-breaker activities. Participants also received a brief introduction to Project CAP, laying the groundwork for the training ahead. 𝐃𝐚𝐲 𝟐 began with creative reflections from the youth participants, embedding a sense of connection and empathy through the '𝐒𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐔𝐬' and '𝐒𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐘𝐨𝐮' sessions, where everyone shared personal stories, building a compassionate bond among the attendees. The session progressed with an insightful presentation on ‘Climate Change and Plastic Pollution: Issues and Challenges,’ providing a comprehensive overview of the project’s focus areas. Youth cohort representatives then presented their proposals and plans, showcasing their innovative ideas. The day also included sessions on Gender Equality and Social Inclusion (GESI), effective campaigning strategies, and leadership development. The productive day concluded with a relaxing movie night, capping off a successful second day of training. 𝐃𝐚𝐲 𝟑 of the VFC-Youth Cohorts training for Project CAP under the Plastic Free Rivers and Seas for South Asia project, began with recaps and reflections from previous days. The day featured insightful sessions on proposal and plan building, offering guidance on refining proposals and best practices for reporting and documentation. The Youth groups then collaborated to present their improved plans. A highlight was the 'Peer to Peer Learning' session, where the Nhu Pala Yuwa Khala group from Lalitpur Metropolitan City, selected under the GreenShift Nepal project, shared their ideas, activities, and explored collaboration opportunities. The day also had a session on Communication Action Planning, focusing on leveraging media to amplify project impacts, by various respected media personnels. The sessions were concluded with a cultural night where participants showcased their culture through various forms and mediums bringing diversity to the workshop. The VFC-Youth cohorts were then provided with certificates for their great participation in the workshop and clarity on way forward.

The training gathered focal person and teachers from 12 selected schools from Lalitpur Metropolitan City, Bardibas Municipality and Nepalgunj Sub-Metropolitan City. The aim of the training was to train and well equip the teachers on the climate smart curriculum developed by the project and the concepts under it as well as the learning methods to teach students about waste management and circular economy in diverse ways. The teachers indulged in interactive discussions and engaged in the sessions very well which helped the sessions to be more fruitful. The three day training proved to be very interactive, engaging and helpful for the project team as well as the selected schools to pave a way forward, create action plans and develop implementation strategies. We look forward to a meaningful and continuous collaboration with the school to move one step closer to a better and sustainable communties. #GreenShift

As the project progresses with its activities, engaging various stakeholders, the youth have united to contribute to GreenShift's mission and vision: promoting a just transition to a circular economy. In total, three youth groups from Bardibas Municipality, Nepalgunj Sub-Metropolitan City, and Lalitpur Metropolitan City have been selected after a rigorous selection process. These youth groups, now integral parts of GreenShift, will receive grants to establish avenues for sustainable communities, raise awareness, engage and educate local governments and communities, all while enhancing their understanding of the importance of the circular economy. Having witnessed the dire consequences of plastic pollution and waste management issues, these youth have crafted detailed proposals filled with innovative ideas for implementation in their respective communities. He outlined Nepal's strategy, including the Green Resilient Inclusive Development (GRID) platform, supported by various partners, aiming to foster regional collaboration and develop cohesive policies to tackle plastic pollution. Komal Karki, UNOPS Nepal's Country Manager, reiterated their commitment to addressing environmental issues through partnerships with the Government of Nepal and other stakeholders, particularly through their support for the Please project. UNOPS has actively contributed, including organizing a national solid waste management workshop that informed the drafting of the Solid Waste Management Act. Key insights from the discussion include the urgent need for improved coordination among government departments at both central and local levels, technical support for waste management entities, and policy considerations such as taxing plastic waste and implementing Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR). Establishing a comprehensive national policy is crucial for private sector engagement, with support from organizations like UNDP and the World Bank. Additionally, stakeholders highlighted the importance of scalable solutions, national standards, and educating the younger generation to foster sustainable waste management practices. The outcomes are expected to inform future interventions, policies, and funding priorities, signaling a step closer to a cleaner, greener Nepal! These interviews were carefully crafted to delve into various themes, including the youths' understanding of the circular economy, the accessibility of leadership opportunities in their localities, and their enthusiasm towards assuming roles in guiding awareness or advocacy campaigns. The primary objective of these interviews was to gain insights into the perspectives, aspirations, and potential contributions of these youths towards advancing sustainability and community awareness initiatives, particularly focusing on mitigating plastic pollution into rivers and the circular economy. Furthermore, the interviews yielded important qualitative insights into the types of trainings that would practically benefit the youths in assuming leadership roles, effectively implementing campaigns, and inspiring other young individuals to partake in awareness/advocacy initiatives.

Read MoreOur team of the CAP project have been actively engaged in outreach efforts with the aim of establishing a youth cohort—a collective of proactive young leaders carefully selected from each project intervention area. This cohort will lead a year-long journey characterized by advocacy, awareness initiatives, and tangible actions, including the organization of Community Advocacy drives and River Cleaning Campaigns, among other impactful activities. In our recent outreach endeavor, the CAP team had the privilege of connecting with a dynamic group of young leaders from Ichchakamana Municipality. Notably, many of these individuals were actively involved in the local rafting community. Through discussions, the team delved into the far-reaching consequences of river pollution on both the recreational experience of rafting enthusiasts and the livelihoods of those reliant on the rafting industry for their sustenance. Moreover, the dialogue extended to exploring collaborative strategies through which the energetic young leaders from the Fishling region could lend their support to advocacy campaigns, championing the cause of plastic pollution-free rivers. These discussions also provided important qualitative insights into the specific hotspots where plastic waste is being disposed of, at particularly higher rates, into the Trishuli and Marshyangdi rivers.

Balmiki samaj is an organization of waste workers in Nepalgunj, working for the livelihood upliftment of waste workers. The workshop was aimed at strengthening the capacity of Balmiki samaj Nepal for advocacy and inclusion of waste workers in policy process and to facilitate in the formation of National Alliance of Waste Workers. The event saw a total attendance of 20+ members of Balmiki samaj Nepal, where the participants also developed a detailed workplan for CSOs of waste workers grant under Greenshift Nepal project, funded by the European Union in Nepal. The workshop was facilitated by Mr. Anil Chitrakar, Social Entrepreneur and Advisor to CREASION. The mayor of Nepalgunj, Mr. Prashant Bista, was also present, he expressed his full support for Balmiki samaj and other similar organizations of waste workers. The event started with a formal session with a warm welcome to all the distinguished guests by Sujata Koirala, General Secretary of CREASION and two Student representatives from one of our Waste Smart Schools in Bharatpur. The welcome remarks highlighted the importance of a collective effort towards achieving circularity of plastic waste. Further, the event marked the official launch of the project by watering a plant in a recycled pot, stressing the importance of Shifting towards Circular Economy and its relation to biodiversity. Furthermore, the presentation session started with Yunish Ghimire, Project Lead of GreenShift Nepal, from CREASION Sabin Dotel Waste Smart Fellow Coordinator, Youth Innovation Lab,Sangita Maharjan from Restless Development. They introduced the project, giving a detailed walk through of the project areas, project objectives target groups and beneficiaries and the timeline of the project and the detailed components and activities. The presentation summed up the overall project and what it aims to achieve over four years. Further, Eloisa Astudillo, Deputy Head of Cooperation of the Delegation of the European Union to Nepal, emphasized the importance of harnessing the vitality of youth to promote circularity of plastic waste, a priority issue for the EU. She expressed her eagerness to witness transformative efforts in the three provinces of the projects in the coming four years duration. Further, speaking at the event, Prashant Bista, Mayor of Nepalgunj Sub-Metropolitan City, provided his special remarks, emphasizing more efforts and projects like such and importance of youths towards promoting a sustainable future for all. Ganesh Shah, Former Minister for Environment, Science and Technology, expressed his eagerness with the commencement of the project and shared his experience in the environment and waste management sector in Nepal. In another special remarks, Masina Khadka, Hon’ble Minister of Forest and Environment, Bagmati Province, expressed her happiness of seeing such collective effort to tackle issues of waste management and waste workers in Nepal. She expressed her eagerness of wanting to see the positive changes the project will bring in the coming years and expressed her full support to the project. Aanand Mishra, Founder and President of CREASION, concluded the event with gratitude to the EU and other partners, affirming the organization's dedication to promoting circularity of plastic waste for Net-Zero carbon Nepal, emphasizing the importance of collective and compassion-based effort of all. Further, sustainable gifts were handed to the special guests. The event shifted towards an informal session with a tour of the Material Recovery Facility (MRF) inside the CREASION Regional office, showcasing our commitment towards plastic circularity. The grounds of the regional office were also filled with 10 different climate smart entrepreneur stalls, such as Kanduk Industry, Eco-Revive, Kleanit Nepal, showcasing their eco-friendly and sustainable products, one of which were also a stall from CREASION showcasing our jackets made from 100% recycled PET bottles. On top of that, there was also a table with Recycled plant pots where guests planted their own selected plants in recycled pots and took them home with them. The event ended with interactive, engaging sessions with meaningful connections and networking, all for a collective vision, to promote just transition towards Circular Economy.

Youth Innovation Lab (YI-Lab) along with the consortium partners, CREASION, Restless Development and Centre for Disaster Management Studies (CDMS), with funding from the European Union organized the second annual sharing event of Nepali Yuwa in Climate Action and Green Growth. Completing the second year in Karnali Province, the annual sharing event was organized to share experiences, learnings, knowledge generated, and innovation brought working with local and provincial level governments, youth, and young professionals. In the second year, 1954 youth have been reached (this includes fellows, mentees, volunteers, digital advocates, and youth reached via digital advocacy campaign, Climate Smart Entrepreneurship, and Climate Fellows), 450 government representatives/officials have been oriented on BIPAD Portal, DRRM and CCA, 3918 community members have been reached during critical infrastructure data collection and VCA, and 17 local/sectoral experts have been engaged as mentors. Through the Climate Fellowship component of the project, ten Climate Fellows were stationed at the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Law, Karnali Province, and nine project municipalities to support the localization of disaster and climate-related plans and policies and the localization of national integrated Disaster Information Management System, Bipad Portal and collected 1782-point data of critical infrastructures. Likewise, through Climate Smart Entrepreneurship, six entrepreneurs were selected for the Innovation Grant 2023 from the cohort of 20 who had undergone three months of mentorship. At the event, six Innovation Grant winners displayed their products. Furthermore, through TagMe: Digital Campaign, 600+ youth joined Data-driven Advocacy and collected 1500+ landslide data to advocate for informed and resilient development. The annual sharing event started with an innovation walk to showcase three project components, where six Innovation Grant Winners of 2023 showcased their products, climate fellows shared their experiences and knowledge generated through the fellowship grant, and digital volunteers shared about the data-driven advocacy through the Tagme campaign. Giving special remarks on the Role of Youth in Climate Action and Green Growth, Eloisa Astudillo, Deputy Head of Cooperation of the European Union shared that when we are working with young people we are working with people that have energy, dynamism, ideas, and values in protecting the world and addressing the climate change. Promoting the role of young people is one of the priorities of EU and EU partnerships with countries like Nepal that have the opportunity to work and shape their future with their strength and capacity. Highlighting global challenges like climate change, she said the EU is making changes inside of Europe to address climate change and trying to be the first climate-neutral continent by 2050. Giving the project overview, Goma Karki, the project lead of YouthCAN.org, emphasized the essence of the project through three key components: Governance, Entrepreneurship, and Advocacy, and shared the knowledge generated from the project. Surendra Basnet, Vice President of the National Youth Council emphasized the importance of youth engagement to promote Entrepreneurship and Innovation. He thanked TheYouthCAN.org for building entrepreneurship in the Karnali province. Appreciating the innovative ideas of the youth, he promised to continue collaboration with them. In conclusion, Climate change is a global threat, we would like to have youths to mitigate the impacts of this problem.
