CREASION conducted a two day staff orientation workshop for the Project Green Shift Nepal consortium partners. Green Shift: Circularity of Plastic Waste for Net-Zero Carbon Nepal project is funded by the European Union to promote the Circular Economy. The project will be implemented in Madhesh Province, Lumbini Province, and Bagmati Province through the consortium partners CREASION, Restless Development Nepal, and Youth Innovation Lab (YI-LAB). The primary objective was to delve deeper into our shared vision for the project and chart a course for the future. Commencing with the workshop's first day, Ms. Shubhuti Ghimire, the Project Lead, provided comprehensive introductions and outlines. Notable presentations were delivered by various departments, including the Finance Department and the Project Implementation Team from each consortium organization. Mr. Aanand Mishra, Founder and President of CREASION, set the tone with opening remarks, while Ms. Sujata Koirala, the General Secretary of CREASION, extended a warm welcome. The day unfolded with engaging group discussions, where teams deliberated on diverse activities spanning different components of the project and its implementation plans. Following these discussions, each group presented their insights and findings. Another pivotal element was a group session focused on developing strategies, during which teams exchanged key findings. The day ended in a highly fruitful, interactive, and productive manner, marked by the enthusiastic participation and valuable contributions of all consortium partners. The second day of the workshop commenced with a reflective session on the preceding day, featuring Ms. Prakriti Koirala's firsthand experiences from her participation in COP28. The day unfolded with a dedicated focus on Capacity Building Training led by two facilitators. Ms. Achala Dahal, the Director of Studies at Nepal Administrative Staff College (NASC), led the first training session. Her insightful presentation delved into the nuances of 'Effective Project Management' and discussed the crucial role of effective leadership in achieving project success. Following this, Mr. Sabin Dhamala, a prominent media personality, took the stage for the second training. He delivered a compelling session on 'Strategic Communications, Visibility, and Stakeholder Engagement.' Mr. Dhamala shared invaluable insights on effective communication strategies and emphasized the importance of teamwork. As the day drew to a close, it resonated positively with valuable feedback and engaging discussions among consortium partners. Read MoreA four day workshop and training for the 'Empowerment and Capacity Building of Women in the Informal Recycling Sector' was conducted from November 27-30, 2023. The training was conducted under the the RiPL project (Preventing plastics in Nepal Rivers by boosting the informal sector). The RiPL project is a project funded by the Norwegian Retailers Environment Fund (HMF). GRID-Arendal Norwegian Geotechnical Institute (NGI), Creasion Nepal Doko Recyclers and ISWA International Solid Waste Association are the project partners for this project. The first day of the workshop consisted of introduction to the workshop and the RiPL project, group activity to understand their expectations from the workshop, pictorial presentation about Solid Waste Management in Kathmandu, enagaging sessions and pictorial presentation about Circular Economy. The Second day of the workshop consisted of a review of the first day, introduction to Occupational Health and Safety, where the participants were divided into groups to share potential risks and challenges in the informal sector, and the facilitators also demonstrated the proper usage of Personal Protective Equipments, followed by brief discussion about hazardous wastes. The second day also included an intimate session on Gender-based violence and harrasment where the particpants shared their experiences and challenges. The Third day of the workshop consisted of a session Self-empowerment and leadership, where there were expereince sharing of the facilitators and the participants along with trust building exercises. The workshop also consisted of a session on financial empowerment and saving and mobilization along with informing the particpants about the financial rights of women. The last day of the workshop consisted of a visit to Dallu collection hub along with all participants and explaination on the working modality of the present collection hub and informing about the new collection hubs to be opened through RiPL project. It was followed by a reflection session of all participants with a learning sharing session. The closing day of the workshop was also graced by prominent figures such as Mr. Chiri Babu Maharjan, Mayor of Lalitpur Metropolitan City, Ms. Sabrina Heerema, Polar Communications Officer at GRID-Arendal, Mr. Aanand Mishra, Founder and President of CREASION. The last day ended on a postive note with reflections and learnings and step forward towards building the capacity and empowering the women in the informal recycling sector.

The second presentation, was delivered by students from Kings College, with an exploration of the essence of plastic and its evolution. This transitioned into an insightful examination of the symbiotic relationship between Nepal and plastics, accentuating their complex presence in modern life. Their explanation of plastic circularity from a business standpoint was equally enlightening. An interesting Q&A session followed, with judges thoughtfully engaging with the presenters. Students from National Law College took the stage for the third presentation, casting a spotlight on Nepal's plastic-related laws, policies, and practices. They astutely underscored the gaps in regulation and implementation, questioning the existing legal framework's efficacy. The comprehensive presentation provided an illuminating overview of prevailing regulations concerning plastics, recycling, and waste management in Nepal. Judges actively participated in a stimulating Q&A session that followed. The fourth presentation, delivered by St. Xavier's College students, focused on grassroots initiatives and community involvement. Their emphasis centered on fostering mindful recycling and upcycling practices, catalyzing responsible choices in plastic consumption. A resonant Q&A segment followed, with judges engaging the presenters. Students from Kathmandu University School of Science presented the fifth presentation, dissecting the genesis of plastics and intricacies of circular economy principles. Their exploration encompassed waste reduction, material circulation, and nature regeneration strategies. The presentation deftly highlighted Nepal's plastic waste generation, environmental impacts, challenges, solutions, and past interventions to curb pollution. Engaging Q&A exchanges with judges ensued. Concluding the competition was a presentation from Hope International College, which unveiled the public health dimensions of plastic pollution. They illuminated the profound health repercussions of plastic pollution and offered viable preventive measures. The presentation concluded on an optimistic note, urging collective action toward a greener world. Subsequent to the presentations, the judges assembled for evaluation as attendees were treated to an enlightening video spotlighting Recycler Saathi and its 2022 achievements. Following this break, Mr. Aanand Mishra, CREASION's Founder and President, delivered an impassioned speech, rallying the youth to take immediate action as the forefront of positive change. The colloquium served as an interactive platform to address the pressing issue of plastic recycling under the impactful campaign #BeatPlasticPollution#. The event witnessed the participation of more than 100 distinguished individuals, including government authorities, local bodies, international delegates, governmental organizations, non-governmental organizations, recyclers, policymakers, experts, academicians, and students. The objective of the National Plastic Colloquium was to foster environmentally and socially sustainable practices within the plastic circular economy, combatting plastic pollution and its far-reaching effects. The event aimed to identify current challenges in plastic recycling, highlight optimal methods for plastic usage and disposal, and raise awareness among policymakers. With the participation of diverse stakeholders such as manufacturers, consumers, recyclers, waste management organizations, civil society organizations, municipalities, policymakers, governmental agencies, academia, and other sectors, the colloquium served as a platform for productive dialogue and collaboration. The colloquium strongly aligns with the goal of the second Nationally Determined Contributions, which aims to achieve Zero Net Carbon Emissions by 2045. The then Prime Minister pledged to implement recycling initiatives in at least 100 municipalities by 2030, marking a significant step toward sustainability. Furthermore, this colloquium is in line with the recently signed UNEA 5.2 Plastic Treaty, through which Nepal commits to addressing the life cycle of plastic by forming a legally binding agreement. The event commenced with an engaging exhibition showcasing a wide array of innovative recycled products. Dr. Jyoti Giri, in her warm welcome remarks, expressed gratitude to all participants for their commitment to combating plastic pollution. The event started with the acknowledgment of the presence of all dignitaries. The program started with a captivating poem on plastic waste management recited by Mr. Bryan Hitan, setting the stage for informative presentations by esteemed speakers. The poem was followed by remarks by Mr. Deepak Shrestha, President of Plast Nepal Foundation, emphasizing the importance of collective action in finding sustainable solutions to the plastic crisis and removing the stereotypical view of plastics as negative components. The event commenced with opening remarks, followed by a speech from the chief guest, Hon'ble Minister Dr. Birendra Prasad Mahato, from the Ministry of Forest and Environment. The Hon'ble Minister expressed his delight at being a part of such a significant platform and emphasized the need for all sectors to unite in combating plastic pollution and developing innovative solutions. He stressed the importance of collaboration between researchers, enterprises, and government officials to initiate a discourse on Plastic Pollution. After the minister's speech, Prof. Dr. Rameshwar Adhikari delivered a presentation titled "The Partnership between Plastics Industries and Academia for Nepal's Development." The presentation shed light on the significance of addressing plastic pollution and highlighted the pervasive presence of plastic in various aspects of our lives. Dr. Adhikari also discussed plastic waste management and presented data showing that 48% of plastics end up in landfills, 32% are burned, and 27% are dumped in rivers. He concluded by emphasizing the need to use plastic responsibly, encouraging all departments and sectors to come together to tackle the issue, and urging individuals to make small changes in their daily lives. The second presentation was given by Ms. Sujata Koirala, the General Secretary of CREASION. Ms. Koirala delivered an engaging talk on the plastic waste scenario in Nepal, the flow of waste within the country, and the characterization of plastic waste. She also discussed the existing policies and laws related to plastic recycling, highlighting the Fifteenth Plan of Nepal (2019/20-23/24), Plastic Ban Regulation and Control Directives of 2022, and the UNEA 5.2 Plastic Treaty. Ms. Koirala presented on CREASION's efforts in plastic waste recycling and identified challenges such as the failure of segregation at the source, lack of incorporation of the informal sector and informal commercial practices, insufficient prioritization and policy implementation at different levels in the country, and the cost-effectiveness of virgin plastics. She urged the government officials present to address these issues and emphasized the need for additional laws related to plastic recycling. Lastly, Ms. Sunaina Maharjan, a representative of the Plast Nepal Foundation, presented on the foundation's role in plastic waste management over the years. She highlighted the foundation's activities, including workshops on sustainable solutions, international exhibitions showcasing plastic waste management, recycling initiatives, awareness programs for students, and plantation campaigns. Ms. Maharjan concluded her presentation by showcasing products made from recycled plastics in Nepal, highlighting the positive outcomes of their efforts. The presentations were followed by a thought-provoking panel discussion, moderated by Dr. Jyoti Giri, which allowed esteemed panelists, a Representative from Plastic Industry Mr. Deepak Shrestha, a Representative from Nepal Bureau of Standard, Jyoti Joshi Bhakta, a Representative from the Environment Department, Shankar Paudel, Spokesperson, Representative from KMC: Ms.Sanu Maya, Representative from Recyclers, Binod Uprety to share their expertise and perspectives on plastic pollution. The annual "Hamro Cycle Yatra #DignityforAll" event serves as a remarkable platform to publicly acknowledge and honor the invaluable contributions of waste workers in maintaining a clean and healthy environment. The rally, attended by approximately 300 participants, achieved resounding success as it garnered the presence of esteemed dignitaries. The event was graced by prominent figures such as Mr. Surendra Basnet, Vice President of National Youth Council, Mr. Aanand Mishra, Founder and President of CREASION, Ms. Sujata Koirala, General Secretary of CREASION, Ms. Sneh Rajbhandari, Communications and Sustainability Director of Bottlers Nepal Limited, Ms. Keki Adhikari, Actor, Goodwill Ambassador and Board member of CREASION, Mr. Rajesh Kalwar, Vice President of Nepal Recollectors and Recyclers Association, Mr. Binod Upreti, Secretary of Nepal Recollectors and Recyclers Association (NRRA) and Ms. Shilpa Maskey, Actor. The rally, held with great enthusiasm, culminated at Khula manch, where the distinguished guests addressed the gathering in a formal ceremony. The event also offered additional support to the waste workers by organizing a medical camp, providing them with much-needed eye and dental checkups, all free of cost. This thoughtful initiative aimed to ensure the well-being and overall health of these dedicated individuals who play a crucial role in our society. The Hamro Cycle Yatra rally serves as a powerful symbol of unity, drawing together various stakeholders including government bodies, private institutions, youth organizations, and waste workers. This collective gathering aims to acknowledge the pressing environmental challenges faced by our nation while simultaneously celebrating the extraordinary contributions of waste workers in upholding a clean and sustainable environment. The National Youth Council Vice President, Mr. Surendra Basnet, shared his insightful thoughts on the importance of waste workers in our society and our responsibility as citizens to recognize thier contributions towards keeping our environment clean. The stage was open to the waste workers who wanted to share their thoughts, opinions and experiences. Member from Nepal Recollectors and Recycler Association took upon the stage to share the struggles and contributions of waste workers. Mr. Aanand Mishra, Founder and President of CREASION also shared the story behind the start of Hamro Cycle Yatra in 2010 and the value and importance behind it. The program ended with an entertaining and fun-filled activities.

Outreach sessions for Climate Smart Entrepreneurship were conducted in Surkhet, Karnali province by our innovation coordinator, Ms. Agrima KC. The outreach sessions were conducted in a total of 9 educational institutions, 3 Youth clubs and 2 community centers reaching over 400+ youths.
Read MoreOn April 18th, 2023, the Youth Innovation Lab and its consortium partners, Restless Development, CREASION, and CDMS, organized the Provincial Kick-off meeting of the Nepali Yuwa in Climate Action and Green Growth (NYCAGG) project in Surkhet. The event was chaired by Raj Kumar Sharma, the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Karnali Province, and attended by representatives from various sectors, including provincial and local government, MoFAGA, CSOs, academics, banking and finance, and youth groups in the Karnali Province. The event's key highlights were the launch of the NYCAGG project, and the idea call for the Innovation Grant 2023 by the Chief Minister of Karnali Province. The NYCAGG project, which is funded by the European Union, aims to empower youths aged 15-29 by providing them with a platform to enhance their entrepreneurial growth in the green economy sector and engage them in disaster and climate-related governance and advocacy. Following the successful completion of the project in Madhesh Province in 2022, the NYCAGG project will be implemented in Karnali Province in 2023, with its three components: Climate Fellowship, Climate Smart Entrepreneurship, and Data-driven advocacy. The Provincial Kick-off Meeting included an overview of the NYCAGG Project and Innovation Grant 2023, guest remarks from MoFAGA and Local Governments, the launch of the NYCAGG Project, special remarks from CREASION, chief guest remarks, a world café discussion on the partnership to strengthen the engagement of youth in climate and disaster governance, green entrepreneurship, and data-driven advocacy, and closing remarks from Youth Innovation Lab. During the overview of the NYCAGG project, Goma Karki, the Project Lead, Youth Innovation Lab, shared that the Climate Fellowship component will be implemented in nine local governments, namely Chaukune Rural Municipality, Barahatal Rural Municipality, Panchapuri Municipality, Thatikandh Rural Municipality, Bhairabi Rural Municipality, Khadachakra Municipality, Mahawai Rural Municipality, Naraharinath Rural Municipality, and Tilagufa Municipality. Additionally, it will also be implemented at the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Law, Karnali Province. A cohort of ten technically proficient youth will be stationed at these government offices to support the localization of the Bipad Portal, https://bipadportal.gov.np/, and the preparation of the Local Disaster and Climate Resilience Plan (LDCRP). Karki also shared that through the Climate Smart Entrepreneurship component, the six best green ideas will be awarded the Innovation Grant 2023 and will have opportunities to work with mentors to further their business ideas. Furthermore, selected digital volunteers from Karnali Province will collect data on environmental and climatic concerns and communicate them to policymakers for policy changes. Sharing about the Innovation Grant 2023, Phurpa Sherpa, shared that idea call for Climate Smart Entrepreneurship is ongoing and will be open till 18 May 2023 and invited the youth and young professionals of Karnali Province to participate in the call. The kick-off meeting was also graced by distinguished guests who shared their special remarks, such as the Hon’ble Chief Minister, Raj Kumar Sharma,Mr. Mayor Lalbir Bhandari the Mayor of Panchapuri municipality, Mr. Santosh Kumar Khatri, representative from MoFGA, and Mr. Sudeep Thakuri, Dean of Mid-western University. Mr. Aanand Mishra, Founder & President, CREASION also shared his remarks on the importance of the role of youths in development and the importance of projects such as NYCAGG to empower and uplift the youths of today. Lastly, closing remarks were given by, Mr. Pradip Khatiwada, Executive Director of YI-lab, who shared about youth empowerment through Nepali Yuwa in Climate Action and Green Growth Project and that through NYCAGG project, it will be creating young professionals with field exposure in the sector of DRR and CCA governance, Green Entrepreneurship, and Data-driven Advocacy.

The closing ceremony of the Tree of the Year Nepal was held on 26th march, 2023 at Square Hotel, Sanepa. The event started with the registration of all the guests. We were graced by the presence of many prominent figures such as our chief guest, The event was graced by prominent figures such as Ms. Nirmala Thapa, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Forest and Environment (MoFE), Mr. Aanand Mishra, Founder and President of CREASION, Ms. Nilu Basnyat, Country Focal Lead for Nepal, for DAI, Mr. Bisam Gyawali, UNV country coordinator, and Mr. Ramakanta Sharma, General Secretary, for National Youth Council. Our three judges, Dr. Sangeeta Rajbhandari (Professor, Department of Botany, TU), Mr. Chungba Sherpa (Wildlife Photographer) and Mr. Ranjit Acharya (CEO, Prisma Advertising), along with influencers and celebrities, Ms. Shilpa Maskey (actor), Ms. Sophiya Bhujel (Ms. Universe Nepal 2022) and Ms. Meera Kaskshapati (Ms. Nepal International 2019). The judges announced the three winners and handed them with their certificates and cash prize. The second runner up was won by Shreyashi Bista. The first runner up was won by Nawaraj Pandey and the title of The Tree of the Year Nepal 2022 was won by Ms. Asmita Sigdel.

On 27th of January, we celebrated the Annual Sharing Event of Nepali Yuwa in Climate Action and Green Growth Project to reflect on the impact that we have generated via our actions throughout this one-year project duration in Madhesh province. We are overjoyed to receive and hear about the small changes we were able to make in these areas, as well as the feedback that we will be able to address in the coming year in our next project locations.
