Workshop on Founding National Network of Waste Pickers Organization in Nepal

By CREASION
Nov 07, 2022

Waste pickers are essential actors in society and the environment. They make their living by recovering valuable recyclables. They are part of the informal workforce involved in managing recyclable waste and diverting it away from landfills. Despite their importance to waste recovery in Nepal, they lack legislative recognition and are not integrated into planning processes. Along with this, there are limited stakeholders working directly with these informal workforces such as Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), and Non-governmental Organizations (NGOs). In addition, two membership-based organizations have been established by the waste pickers themselves for the betterment of waste pickers. There is a need to have a national network of organizations, where NGOs, waste-pickers organizations, and other relevant stakeholders meet regularly and explore collaborations and connect with the Global Alliance of Waste-pickers. A national network of waste pickers’ organizations is essential for pushing recognition of waste pickers' work at the national level. The national network boosts efforts to include waste pickers in various national-level programs. A few of the successful examples of national coalitions are there in India, Brazil, and Colombia, where waste-pickers have managed to get recognized in law, and have policies friendly toward their work.  CREASION with the support of Women in Informal Employment: Globalizing and Organizing - WIEGO, International Alliance of Waste Picker and Samyukta Safai Jagaran successfully conducted a two-day workshop on "Founding National Network of Waste Pickers Organization in Nepal. " The main objective of the workshop was to build networks and enhance the capacity of organizations, individuals, and local stakeholders to work for the benefit of waste pickers in Nepal. The first day of the workshop started with learning about the status of waste pickers in Nepal, where they briefly discussed the situational analysis of waste pickers in Kathmandu, Nepalgunj, and Madhesh province. It was then followed by a session showcasing the importance of creating a coalition at the national level, where Mr. Kabir Arora, National Coordinator of the Alliance of Waste Pickers, shared his experience in forming a coalition of waste pickers in different countries, and discussed the Plastics Treaty update and the ongoing work at global level for social protection. The Second Day of the workshop started with the introduction to Alliance of Indian Waste Pickers by Mr. Kabir Arora, National Coordinator of Alliance of Indian Waste Pickers followed by an experience sharing session of Manwara Begum, President of Safai Sena, Delhi and member of Alliance of Indian Waste Workers via Zoom. It further continued with a panel discussion where the panelist were Shristi Shrestha, Environment Inspector, Kathmandu Metropolitan City, Pradeep Amatya, Head of Environmental Division representative of Lalitpur Metropolitan City, Birat Ghimire Head of Environment Division, Bharatpur Metropolitan City, Ashish Shah, Proprietor of Namaste Recycler, Deepson Shreemal Outsource Manager, Himalayan life Plastics; Shanti Tamang, President of Samyukta Safai Jagaran and Ashmita Basnet, Waste Picker.

International Youth Day 2022

By Creasion
Aug 12, 2022

Great things are done by a series of small things bought together! “May your choices reflect your hopes, not your fears” said Nelson Mandela, with hands clenched with agony and eyes filled with tears of hope, pinning his head on for a lighter and brighter world above discrimination. Bigotries have not yet come to an end, but the world is trying, trying to get over these prejudices and rise above social evils. An effort was made in the World Conference of Ministers Responsible for Youth in 1999, only for the world to recognize August 12 to be a day dedicated to adolescents and young adults, to be remembered as “International Youth Day”; lying parallel to Nelson Mandela’s words of wisdom. Going by the same tradition, the theme for 2022 International Youth Day revolved around a term alien to most, “Intergenerational Solidarity: Creating a World for All Ages”. The United Nations describes it as breaking barriers between the two generations, addressing “Ageism” as a health issue. It has ears for both old and the young, leaving no soul unheard. Ageism is unwontedly seen on the biased side of the spectrum through the aspects of racism and sexism, unwittingly jeopardizing their growth to contribute to the community in the ways possible, paving the path to greatness. Leading up to the occasion of International Youth Day 2022 on August 11, 2022 the volunteers of CREASION headed out to Basantapur Durbar Square for a fundraising event. The event’s essence was to collect funds to celebrate Raksha Bandhan and Janai Purnima with the elderly people. The volunteers of Kathmandu Cohort made special handmade rakhis and bookmarks which were displayed and sold and which were appreciated, supported, and encouraged by many people. On August 12, 2022 CREASION successfully conducted programs in Kathmandu and Chitwan. The volunteers of Kathmandu Cohort visited an old age home named Manavsewa Ashram to celebrate and interact with the elderly. The volunteers eagerly interacted with the elderly people and celebrated Janai Purnima by making Quati for the elders and had a Mehendi session with them. The volunteers of Chitwan celebrated International Youth Day by setting their priorities and focusing on creating tangible improvement in their lives through creating vision boards that reflect their goals for self-improvement and environmental conservation. The session was led by Ms. Rammaya Shrestha, Community Outreach Officer and the event was graced with the presence of Mr. Bikram K.C, representation of Bottlers Nepal Terai Limited who shared his inspiring words on how youths can become the agents of change and help in reducing carbon emissions through Recycler Saathi.

I will provide full support in helping prevent plastic pollution in Nepal rivers.” said Honorable Mr. Ramsahay Prasad Yadav, Ministry of Forests and Environment. Some of the components of the project entail creating an infrastructure and putting a system to separately collect and recycle different types of collected plastic. This project also includes the establishment of a small-scale locally run plastic recycling facility that can manage both high- and low-quality plastics to prevent littering in the rivers. “Today, when we look around Kathmandu valley, the rivers or landfill sites are filled with heaps of garbage which is mainly plastic” said Ms. Torun Dramdal, Norwegian Ambassador to Nepal. “The pollution of plastic has increased immensely from 1950s and the global impact is huge. The rise of plastic pollution pushed the Norwegian government to keep it at its top priority and due to the monsoon season in Kathmandu it has created a huge problem of flash floods, what we need is system change targeting the full lifecycle in working towards creating a proper waste management system and a recycling system that will help address issues of environmental protection” she further added. The informal sector plays a crucial role in waste management for Nepal. Informal waste workers range from collectors to waste pickers and scrap dealers. Many of the estimated 10,000–15,000 waste pickers working in Kathmandu Valley are women, but they are among the most marginalized. “Informal Waste Workers are an important component to the environment. Thus, behavioral change communication should be enforced to encourage people to keep and sustain a clean and healthy environment. For plastic recycling and the development in preventing plastics in Nepal Rivers, the use of advanced technology should be brought. ” said Aanand Mishra, Founder and President of CREASION. As the population of Kathmandu increases, plastic usage and thereby waste generation is also growing. Approaches to managing waste in the capital include unorganized dumping and open burning. On average, 48% of the waste in municipalities is landfilled, while 32% is burnt, and 27% is openly dumped on riversides.
