On the occasion of International Youth Day, CREASION, in collaboration with The Coca-Cola Foundation, conducted the 'Youth Dialogue on the Circular Economy of Plastics' with the aim to bring together young minds from diverse backgrounds for a presentation competition, centered on the theme of Plastic Circularity in Nepal.
This event not only served as a celebratory platform for our dynamic and passionate youth but also as an opportunity to empower and stimulate their intellect. The event's commencement involved welcoming esteemed guests and offering an introduction to the proceedings and its overarching objective. Following the acknowledgement and introduction of the judges and special guests, Mr. Parakram Rana, CREASION's Goodwill Ambassador, inaugurated the event with an inspirational address, urging the youth to actively contribute to a more promising world. He emphasized the global significance of youth and their pivotal role in shaping the future. The event gained further momentum through an impactful presentation by our General Secretary, Ms. Sujata Koirala, presenting on Nepal's current plastic landscape and CREASION's tireless efforts toward plastic circularity and its visionary goals.
The highlight of the event was the presentation competition, featuring participants from Tribhuvan University's Environment Science program. Their presentations eloquently delved into diverse aspects: the multifaceted nature of plastics, their contemporary relevance, and the dual roles they play as both a boon and a challenge. Engaging data on plastic consumption, production, collection, and disposal were also presented. These presentations culminated in a compelling exploration of the hurdles and pathways toward a sustainable future. Each presentation was subsequently followed by an engaging Q&A session where judges probed the presenters.
The second presentation, was delivered by students from Kings College, with an exploration of the essence of plastic and its evolution. This transitioned into an insightful examination of the symbiotic relationship between Nepal and plastics, accentuating their complex presence in modern life. Their explanation of plastic circularity from a business standpoint was equally enlightening. An interesting Q&A session followed, with judges thoughtfully engaging with the presenters.
Students from National Law College took the stage for the third presentation, casting a spotlight on Nepal's plastic-related laws, policies, and practices. They astutely underscored the gaps in regulation and implementation, questioning the existing legal framework's efficacy. The comprehensive presentation provided an illuminating overview of prevailing regulations concerning plastics, recycling, and waste management in Nepal. Judges actively participated in a stimulating Q&A session that followed.
The fourth presentation, delivered by St. Xavier's College students, focused on grassroots initiatives and community involvement. Their emphasis centered on fostering mindful recycling and upcycling practices, catalyzing responsible choices in plastic consumption. A resonant Q&A segment followed, with judges engaging the presenters.
Students from Kathmandu University School of Science presented the fifth presentation, dissecting the genesis of plastics and intricacies of circular economy principles. Their exploration encompassed waste reduction, material circulation, and nature regeneration strategies. The presentation deftly highlighted Nepal's plastic waste generation, environmental impacts, challenges, solutions, and past interventions to curb pollution. Engaging Q&A exchanges with judges ensued.
Concluding the competition was a presentation from Hope International College, which unveiled the public health dimensions of plastic pollution. They illuminated the profound health repercussions of plastic pollution and offered viable preventive measures. The presentation concluded on an optimistic note, urging collective action toward a greener world.
Subsequent to the presentations, the judges assembled for evaluation as attendees were treated to an enlightening video spotlighting Recycler Saathi and its 2022 achievements. Following this break, Mr. Aanand Mishra, CREASION's Founder and President, delivered an impassioned speech, rallying the youth to take immediate action as the forefront of positive change. He emphasized youth's pivotal role in shaping a better world and concluded by extending his wishes for a joyful International Youth Day.
The anticipation reached its pinnacle as the judges took the stage to unveil the winners. Kathmandu University School of Science students claimed the second prize for their insightful presentation, while the students from National Law College sealed the championship with their exceptional presentation. Certificates were provided to all participants, while judges received gratitude-filled gift hampers for their invaluable contribution.
The event concluded in a warm High-Tea and networking session, fostering connections and solidarity amongst attendees.
